chose Freetrade.

The beauty of Freetrade is that you can invest very small amounts, which can add up over time.
Daniel lives in Manchester and works for the city council. He first experimented with investing many years ago but, during Covid, he decided he wanted to build up more financial security and discovered Freetrade.

Q: What prompted you to start investing again?

A: During Covid, I decided I needed to try to get some money behind me. I read about Freetrade, downloaded the app, and started with one share in British American Tobacco after my father suggested it. When I received a dividend, I thought, this is easy. From there, I gradually bought more shares. I tend to hold investments for the long term rather than constantly buying and selling, although I have made a few shorter term trades more recently.

Q: Why did you choose Freetrade?

A: It was the first platform I tried, and I liked it, so I didn’t see much point in looking elsewhere. I decided to keep all my investments in one place. The beauty of Freetrade is that you can invest very small amounts. Instead of buying an expensive coffee, I might put that £3 into a share. Those small amounts can add up over time. I always think that small changes can eventually make a big difference.

Q: What has investing enabled you to do differently?

A: The more I’ve invested and saved, the less I actually want to spend. I once thought about buying a motorhome or a Porsche, but now I look at my old Toyota and think, it gets me where I need to go. I usually reinvest my dividends, but they can also pay for something meaningful. I’m visiting my sister in Washington DC for Thanksgiving, and the dividends from one of my investments should cover the flights. Even if a return only pays for one meal out, I still see that as a gain.

Q: How has investing changed the way you feel about money?

A: It has taken a lot of the worry out of my life. If my car fell apart tomorrow, I know I could sell some shares and replace it. I wouldn’t immediately have to go to a bank, borrow money or take out expensive finance. That gives me freedom. I sleep very well at night these days. I didn’t always. Knowing that I have investments behind me makes life feel less stressful.

Q: What are you investing for?

A: I’m hoping to retire in March 2028, so my investments could become part of my retirement income. I may sell some of them then, or I may keep them invested. It depends on what happens in life. I also own part of a shared ownership flat in Manchester that has been affected by cladding problems. If it becomes mortgageable again, my investments could give me the option to buy the remaining share. Owning it fully could then provide an income in retirement.

For me, investing is about having choices. It means that if something changes, I have options rather than immediately needing to borrow. I’m not a millionaire, but I’m doing all right, and that financial buffer gives me a real sense of security.
