What is an OTC stock?

Over-the-counter (OTC) securities are stocks and other assets like commodities and currencies that aren’t listed on a major exchange in the US, like the NYSE or NASDAQ. Instead, they’re traded through a broker-dealer network.

Companies tend to trade OTC if they don’t meet the requirements to be listed on a formal exchange. They may not have a high enough volume of shares available, their shares may not trade above a minimum price, or they may not want to pay the listing fees of major exchanges.

All the OTC stocks on Freetrade are American Depository Receipts (ADRs), which are tradable assets that mirror shares in companies issued outside of the US. ADRs on Freetrade represent large, international companies. So they have higher liquidity and are often less volatile than other types of OTC stocks.

What to consider when investing in OTCs

Liquidity

OTC stocks may be less liquid due to lower trade volumes from day to day. This can result in buy or sell orders being rejected.

Volatility

OTC stocks are prone to greater price fluctuation and can make volatile moves based on the release of market and economic data.

Transparency

There tends to be less publicly available information on companies that trade OTC as a result of fewer regulatory requirements.

Risk

OTC stocks are considered speculative in nature. Unlike listed stocks, they generally don’t need to meet minimum listing standards.
