Global Investment Performance Standards (GIPS)

A set of standards which investors use to present their investment results.

Ponzi Scheme

A form of fraud designed to lure new investors, and pays the earlier backers by using the new investors' money.

Conventional gilts

Gilts where the dividends and principal repayments are fixed in nominal terms. This is as opposed to an index-linked gilt where the dividends and principal repayments are related to movements in the Retail Prices Index (RPI).

Maturity date

The date on which a gilt is redeemed and the gilt holder receives the repayment of the nominal amount and final dividend or coupon payment.

Oligopoly

A situation in which a market or industry is controlled by a small group of companies.

Yield

Income from an investment as a percentage of its current price.

Geometric Mean Return

A way of calculating compound returns on an investment or savings over a set period of time.

Annualised Rate of Return

The average annual return an investor sees over a set period of time.

Venture Capital

A type of financing that investors provide to startups, who sometimes announce getting said financing in TechCrunch, to big fanfare.
